We have compiled details about the upcoming assembly below and in the attached document.
What is a people’s convention/assembly?
A people’s assembly is an event where ordinary community members come together to discuss and solve problems or make decisions. It’s a form of participatory democracy with minimal organizer interference. A people’s convention is a variant we’ve created of the people’s assembly, with more of a convention structure. Instead of the whole crowd working together at once, we break into small groups and those groups send delegates forward who draft everyone’s ideas and experience into a local platform of sorts.
What is actually gonna happen here?
Normal community members are going to gather together, and discuss local issues and our lives. We are going to try and understand one another better, decide how we want local issues changed, and get some grassroots organization and people power going. The culmination of the event is to draft a platform, to advocate changes in the community and guide further action.
What about the coronavirus and digital involvement?
Due to the pandemic, those who might be sick, vulnerable, exposed, symptomatic, or immunocompromised PLEASE stay home. We will be trying to keep some kind of social distancing at the in-person event, and questions can be sent to our email and social media.
Who is hosting this?
The Butler County Socialist Movement is the result of grassroots energy among community members, looking to further social justice, economic democracy, and worker’s rights in Butler County. BLM Oxford is a local Oxford group working for local legislative change and community support in defense of Black lives in the area. They have been hosting several protests and actions in Oxford over the past month.
